The littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1) continues a scheduled four-month maintenance period in a dry dock at Naval Base San Diego. Freedom is the first of two littoral combat ships designed to operate in shallow water environments to counter threats in coastal regions. The ship is still under contractor trials and after completing this maintenance period Freedom will go through her final contractor trials and begin fleet operations.
