180518-N-AV243-0014 PEARL HARBOR (May 18, 2018) Jim Neuman, Navy Region Hawaii historian, recounts the events of May 21st, 1944 at the 74th annual West Loch disaster remembrance ceremony hosted by Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, with support by Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and the service Navy association. On May 21st, 1944 while preparing for the invasion of Saipan, in the Marianas Islands Army troops were loading ammunition, weapons and fuel onto vessels.
