Gunnery Sgt. Jesse Saltzman, platoon sergeant, Route Clearance Company, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, receives his Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device from Lt. Col. Andrew Niebel, battalion commander, 1st CEB, during an awards ceremony, Aug. 8. Saltzman received the medal in recognition of his heroic service during the battalion's deployment to Afghanistan. One of Saltzman's notable acts of bravery occurred while leading a dismounted squad through Ladaar Bazaar in Helmand province. The Marines were hit with an improvised explosive device, and though Saltzman was wounded and suffered a concussion, he organized a casualty collection point, a landing zone and refused medical treatment until all of his wounded Marines were evacuated.
