Indiana National Guard 2nd Lt. Johnathan Crafton, of Madison, Ind., center, accepts the physical fitness excellence award from Maj. Gen. Clif Tooley, left, and Col. Paul Grube during a ceremony at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011. Crafton, who also received the spark plug award from his peers for motivating them through the 18-month officer candidate school, graduated and earned the rank of second lieutenant.
"I'm very excited, I know it's a lot of responsibility, but I'm excited to handle it," said Crafton of his new job where he'll be a forward support officer at the Headquarters Detachment, 1st Battalion, 152nd Cavalry in New Albany, Ind. He credited his peers and his father, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, for help and advice. "The more stuff we went through the closer we got," he said of his 15 fellow graduates and the camaraderie they developed.
