Spc. Ashleigh Aplin, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., a supply specialist with the 224th Sustainment Brigade, and one of her Australian counterparts snap photos of the two vice admirals, two major generals and air commodore who came to visit the troops at Kokoda Barracks outside of Canungra, Queensland, Australia July 15, 2011, as part of Talisman Sabre 2011. “You always hear about your chain of command, but you never really see them from the higher ups down,” said Aplin, “and so to see the two-star general and a couple other generals meeting, it makes you feel like you’re a part of something a lot bigger than just the division. It goes a lot higher, and you don’t realize that until those individuals show up in a frickin’ helicopter landing. I was just in awe that they were here so I had to get a picture.” Aplin is one of 120 California Army National Guardsmen, mostly from the 40th ID, which is responsible for planning and tracking all elements related to the land war during Exercise Talisman Sabre 2011, a large-scale training exercise aimed at improving the combat readiness and interoperability of the U.S. and Australian forces.
