Col. Michael Hudson, commander of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU) speaks during the 69th anniversary of the World War II U.S. Marine assault on Makin Island during a commemoration aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Makin Island is the flagship for Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5 and is underway for PHIBRON-MEU Integrated Training (PMINT) in preparation for the ship's first operational deployment.
