Petty Officer 3rd Class Keith Morlang pulls a chain taut during a stern gate marriage between a Landing Craft Unit (LCU) and USS Shreveport (LPD 12). A stern gate marriage is performed when conditions are calm enough to connect the stern gate of an LCU directly to the stern gate of an LPD to offload vehicles and personnel. Shreveport is deployed in the 5th Fleet as part of Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group in support of Maritime Security Operations (MSO). MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists the use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
