Soldiers attending the Rappel Master certification face their final challenge, Aug. 19, with the Aircraft Command and Control Practical Exercise at Fort Pickett. Soldiers from the Fort Pickett-based 1st Battalion, 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute teach the five-day course where students learn the skills they need to be responsible for rappelling operations from UH-60s and towers. For their final evaluation, soldiers oversee two other students rappel from the aircraft while inspecting their equipment and safety harnesses, and ensure the safety of the soldiers from the time they enter the aircraft until they reach the ground and are clear from the helicopter.
