Lt. Col. Kyle Shoop, commanding officer, Marine Fighter Attack Detachment 211, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), explains F-35B Lightning II capabilities to Rear Adm. Bill Byrne, commander, Carrier Strike Group 15, aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), June 2, 2018, underway in the Pacific Ocean. The Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are conducting Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), the final exercise before the units' upcoming deployment. This exercise validates the ARG/MEU team's ability to adapt and execute missions in ever-changing, unknown environments. Upon completion of COMPTUEX, the 13th MEU and Essex ARG will be certified as the nation's premier forward-deployed, crisis response force, capable of executing missions across the broad spectrum of military operations. The F-35B, deploying with the Essex ARG and 13th MEU, is the most capable aircraft ever to support a Marine rifleman on the ground and to defend the Amphibious Task Force. The ARG/MEU's summer deployment will mark the Lightning II's first continental U.S. and combat deployment. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Joshua Jackson)
