Demetrius Jess, a martial arts instructor with Support Battalion, explains what is expected of recruits from Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, during their pugil sticks bouts June 11, 2018, on Parris Island, S.C. During pugil sticks and body sparring, martial arts instructors, like Jess, 23, from Tampa, Fla., supervise the bouts ensuring they are conducted safely. Bravo Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 24, 2018. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
