Cpl. Thomas R. VanderLaan, a correctional specialist at the Naval Consolidated Brig, pumps his last repetition of dumbbell curls during physical therapy at the Veterans Affairs Spinal Cord Injury Center, Aug. 22. VanderLaan is recovering from a break in his C-5 vertebrae he suffered while tackling a weighted dummy during football practice with the Miramar “Falcons,” June 29, 2011. The break, located in his neck, left him with the loss of feeling in his nerves and the inability to walk.
