NORMANDY, France (June 19, 2018) Rear Adm. Shawn Duane, vice commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, assists Radioman 2nd Class Julius “Henry” Pieper’s niece, Linda Pieper Suitor, after she placed a bronze rosette by Pieper’s name on the Wall of the Missing at Normandy American Cemetery following Pieper’s funeral. The rosette indicates that Pieper is no longer missing. Henry Pieper and his twin brother, Radioman 2nd Class Ludwig “Louie” Pieper, were both killed when their ship, Landing Ship Tank (LST) 523, struck an underwater mine off the coast of France on June 19, 1944. Louie’s remains were found immediately, but Henry was listed as missing until his remains were identified in December 2017. The family requested that Henry be buried in Normandy next to his brother.
