Members from all five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces participate in the joint full military honors funeral service of former U.S. Secretary of Defense Frank C. Carlucci in Section 48 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, June 26, 2018.
Carlucci served for two years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. On Nov. 23, 1987, he succeeded Casper Weinberger as Secretary of Defense during the Reagan administration. During these 14 months, Carlucci did much to promote foreign and military policies, as well as manage the defense budget during the stock market crash of 1987 with his deputy secretary, William H. Taft IV. Carlucci left the office on Jan. 20, 1989, with the advent of the Bush administration.
In an interview with reporters shortly before his departure as Secretary of Defense, Carlucci said he was most proud of three accomplishments: persuading Congress to agree to streamline base closing procedures, the conduct of the successful tanker escort operation in the Persian Gulf, and the development of a new, positive relationship with Soviet military authorities.
Carlucci’s spouse, Marcia Myers Carlucci, received the flag from his casket.
