Smitherman, the outgoing commanding officer of 6th MCD, hands over the unit colors to Col. William C. Gray, the incoming commanding officer of 6th MCD, during a change of command ceremony at Parris Island, South Carolina, July 2, 2018. During the ceremony Smitherman will relinquish his command to Gray. The handing over of the colors signifies the passing of command from one Marine to another during the ceremony.
