180712-N-LY160-0009 PACIFIC OCEAN (July 12, 2018) Machinist’s Mate (Weapons) 3rd Class Chris O’Brien, assigned to the fast-attack submarine USS Olympia (SSN 717), operates a control valve to load a Mark 48 Advanced Capabilities (ADCAP) torpedo in Olympia'a torpedo room during a sinking exercise in support of Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, July 12. Multiple air, land, and sea assets sunk decommissioned ex-USS Racine (LST-1191) during the sinking exercise. Twenty-five nations, 46 ships, five submarines, about 200 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 27 to Aug. 2 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security of the world’s oceans.
