Mark Buckmire of Orlando, Florida, an Advanced Division Officer Course (ADOC) student assigned to Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS), practices ship navigation in the Conning Officer Virtual Environment (COVE) simulator. The COVE simulator provides state-of-the-art navigation and shiphandling training and can emulate the U.S. Navy’s homeports and almost every routine port of call around the world. Headquartered in Newport, Rhode Island and overseeing nine learning sites worldwide, SWOS readies seabound Sailors to serve on surface combatants as officers, enlisted engineers, and enlisted navigational professionals to fulfill the Navy’s mission to maintain global maritime superiority.
