Lt. Col. Brian Melton (left) and Command Sgt. Maj. John Lepowsky (right) prepare to hoist the battalion colors of the Brainerd, Minn., based 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor, for the first time in a combat zone since World War II, where the battalion participated in the Bataan Death March. The lineage of the 1-194 CAB “Battling Bastards of Bataan” was read while the colors were uncased at Camp Virginia, Kuwait, Aug. 17, 2011, and signifies the assumption of command and mission in support of Operation New Dawn, the final phase of post-combat operations in Iraq. Sgt. Maj Lepowsky, a business owner from Freemont, Minn., serves as a tanker and the battalion’s senior enlisted member, while Lt. Col. Melton, an infantry officer from Moorhead, Minn., where he is a prosecuting attorney, commands more than 600 soldiers from the Minnesota-based 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th “Red Bull” Infantry Division.
