180731-N-ZK021-0026 NEWPORT, R.I. (July 31, 2018) Lt. John Tanalega of Las Vegas, Nevada, an instructor assigned to Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS), explains the Conning Officer Virtual Environment (COVE), a state-of-the-art navigation and shiphandling trainer, to a Gold Star teen during a tour at SWOS. Gold Star teens, ages 15-18, are surviving children of military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving in Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations units. Twenty-one teens attended a weeklong Gold Star Teen Sailing Adventure Camp at Naval Station (NS) Newport, which also included learning sailing from the NS Newport marina, rappelling with the Rhode Island National Guard, and dining in Ney Hall Galley with members of the Naval Academy Preparatory School class of 2019.
