Oregon National Guard service members train for wildland firefighting duty at the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) in Salem, Oregon, August 2, 2018. Nearly 200 Citizen-Soldiers were called-up for the second iteration of Oregon National Guard personnel to help support the efforts of wildland firefighters around the state. 200 members of the Guard were previously trained in July at Camp Rilea near Warrenton, Oregon, and were dispatched to the Garner Complex Fire. The “red card” training certification provided by DPSST is the same training required of all public and private wildland firefighters. It covers a wide variety of topics including safety considerations, deploying fire shelters, hand tool work, hoses, how to assess and mitigate hot spots, protecting structures and understanding fire behavior.
