Retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. James “Jim” Capers, Jr., was one of the Marines Corps’ first African-American special operators, and the first African-American Marine officer nominated for the Medal of Honor. He earned two Bronze stars, a Silver Star, and five Purple Hearts. Capers, Jr., spoke during an all-hands professional military education event at the Base Theater on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., July 31. Marine Corps Community Services Lejeune-New River hosted the event to allow Marines the opportunity to see the documentary, “Major Capers: The Legend of Team Broadminded,” meet Maj. Capers and ask questions. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Breanna Weisenberger)
