MIMS, Fla. (Aug. 10, 2018) A traditional horse-drawn caisson bearing the urn of Rear Adm. Alene Duerk winds along the road during the military funeral honors ceremony at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. Family, friends and colleagues gathered at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery to pay final respects to Duerk, the Navy's first woman flag officer. Duerk was appointed an ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps in 1943 and went on to become director of the Navy Nurse Corps in 1970 and the U.S. Navy’s first woman admiral in 1972. Traditional military funeral honors were provided by sailors from various units in Navy Region Southeast, including Naval Ordnance Test Unit, Regional Operations Center, Navy Band Southeast, Personnel Support Detachment, Fleet Readiness Center and Patrol Squadron (VP) 30.
