The transcript of the German surrender note delivered on Major Charles Whittlesey, the commander of the 1st Battalion 308th Regiment , on October 7, 1918. Whittlesey was the ranking officer in a force of 540 men who had been cut off by German troops during an attack conducted by the 77th Infantry Division, a National Army division made up of draftees from New York City.
