Garrett, the 42nd "Rainbow" Division signal officer tests a German telephone captured from the enemy during the Saint Mihiel Offensive on Sept. 19, 1918 at Meuthe et Moselle, France. The 42nd Division, made up of National Guard Soldiers from across the United States were in the forfront of the Saint Mihiel Offensive, the first time the U.S. Army planned an executed an attack on its own during World War I.
