U.S. Marines from III Marine Expeditionary Force board a KC-130J aircraft belonging to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III MEF, on the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma flight line departing for the Kingdom of Thailand in support of the Humanitarian Assistance Survey Team in Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 15, 2011. The team has been assembled to survey potential humanitarian support for Thailand, which is one of several Southeast Asian countries that have been affected by an abnormal monsoon season this year. The Marine presence on Okinawa has resulted in hundreds of thousands of lives in the region being saved. Because of its forward deployed presence in Okinawa, they are able to respond to Humanitarian Crises at a moment's notice such as in the Tsunami in 2004, the cyclone in Bangladesh, Cyclone Nargis in Burma in 2008, the floods, in the Philippines in 2009 and 2010, and the Tsunami on mainland Japan in 2011.
