ARCTIC OCEAN - A label is affixed to a 2,500-pound iron weight used for buoys Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) approximately 100 miles northwest of Barrow, Alaska, in the Chukchi Sea. The weight sits on the bottom of the ocean and is used to keep the buoy on top of the water in place. Approximately 30 scientists are aboard the Healy deploying sensors and autonomous submarines in the Arctic to study stratified ocean dynamics and how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface for the Office of Naval Research. The Healy is one of two ice breakers in U.S. service and is the only military ship dedicated to conducting ice research in the Arctic.
