ARCTIC OCEAN - U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Cadet Taylor Crisci (left) and U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Shannon Eubanks talk after deploying a series of sensors into the Chukchi Sea from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, approximately 100 miles northwest of Barrow, Alaska. When classes aren't in session, MMA cadets spend their summers aboard operational units to gain at-sea experience before they graduate. Approximately 30 scientists are aboard the Healy deploying sensors and autonomous submarines in the Arctic to study stratified ocean dynamics and how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface for the Office of Naval Research. The Healy is one of two ice breakers in U.S. service and is the only military ship dedicated to conducting ice research in the Arctic.
