More than a week and half has passed and the Cape Fear River is just one of several major rivers that are spilling over its banks in North Carolina after hurricane Florence made landfall. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District monitors 3 locks and dams on the river just north of Wilmington.
Lock and Dam 1 project is completely submerged. The project was originally constructed in 1915 and modified in 1934 to increase the lift by three feet to a total of eleven feet. The lock is 40 feet by 200 feet. The locks and dams rarely lock large vessels through but instead help protect water intakes for cities and industries along the river by backing up the water and they have become popular recreation spots. Once the river levels recede, Corps operators will inspect the structure to ensure that it is safe and operational for recreational use.
