Hurricane Florence made landfall on Sept. 14, 2018 and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District began assessments of impacted federal ports in NC, Sept. 17, 2018. As part of its assessment, divers from Donjon Marine Company deployed to the area of the Snows Marsh Channel with the Octopus survey system collecting images in the Cape Fear River and identified several large obstructions that were previous detected by Corps survey crews, as large rocks. USACE and Donjon Marine continues with multi-beam and side scan surveying of other identified targets for possible identification and assessment prior to deploying divers into the Wilmington Harbor. A salvage plan will be developed based on today’s findings to determine further action.
USACE is integrated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to ensure federal channels are cleared as quickly as possible to enable rapid port reopening.
