Coast Guard Cutter Healy conducts Arctic patrol in support of the Office of Naval Research

ARCTIC OCEAN - U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Nathan Poppink uses hand signals to communicate to a crane operator on the Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, approximately 300 miles northeast of Barrow, Alaska. Poppink is one of approximately 100 crew members and 30 scientists aboard the Healy deploying sensors and autonomous submarines in the Arctic to study stratified ocean dynamics and how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface for the Office of Naval Research. The Healy, which is homeported in Seattle, is one of two ice breakers in U.S. service and is the only military ship dedicated to conducting research in the Arctic.
