A detailed model of an A-6 Intruder is on display at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. The model depicts an Intruder assigned to VA-35, the Black Panthers. The squadron operated variants of the iconic aircraft. They operated A-6As from 1965-1968; A-6Bs from 1968-1971, A-6Cs from 1971-1973, and finally the A-6E from 1973-1995. They also operated a tanker version, KA-6D Intruders from 1970-1995. The unit deployed to the Vietnam War on several occasions, and in 1967 conducted its first combat aerial mining operation since WWII; dropping aerial mines in the Song Ca and Song Giang Rivers in North Vietnam. The unit was also on-call in January-February 1968; and was diverted to the Sea of Japan should they be needed during the USS Pueblo (AGER-2) incident in North Korea. The unit continued operations since Vietnam, and was finally disestablished on January 31, 1995. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum will be opening a new exhibit which chronicles the US Navy’s involvement in the Vietnam War, the exhibit is slated to open in May of 2019.
