U.S. Army Soldiers of the 42nd Infantry Division’s Task Force Linden prepare a defensive position at their log and dirt bunker near Kauffenheim, France, January 8, 1945. The Soldiers, assigned to Company I, 242nd Regiment, held off the German offensive in Alsace, France called Operation Nordwind without the division’s artillery or support elements. The actions of one division Soldier, Master Sergeant Vito Bertoldo will be presented as part of the 2018 Netflix documentary series “Medal of Honor.” The series highlights stories of America’s Medal of Honor recipients. Bertoldo, of Decatur, Illinois, received the Medal of Honor for his actions defending his battalion command post while assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division’s 1st Battalion, 242nd Infantry Regiment in Hatten, France January 9-10, 1945.
