HMS Northumberland in the early hours of October 30, 2018 carried out Naval Gunfire Support (NGS) live firing on to groung targets as directed by spotters ashore, Royal Navy frigates and destroyers are all fitted with a 4.5 inch (114mm) gun and one of its roles (NGS) is to provide fire support to troops ashore. Excercise Trident Juncture 18 (TRJE18) is the flagship collective defence exercise for NATO and is the biggest in 2018. The Exercise will take place from 25th October until the 7th November.
