Merle Egan Anderson, circa 1918, while serving as a mobile telephone operator for the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France, captured on screen here in the the documentary film, "The Hello Girls: The Army's Special Weapon in World War I." Anderson petitioned Congress for 60 years to be recognized as a U.S. Army veteran and was eventually issued discharge papers in 1978.
