McHugh, 3rd sergeant major of the Marine Corps, at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, N.C., Nov. 10, 2018. “This is a happy moment in remembrance of my father and all of the service members for their dedication and service to our country.” said Pat Miller. Since Nov. 10, 1954, wreath-laying ceremonies honoring former Commandants and Sergeant Majors have been conducted at their gravesides or other places as a continuing part of the Marine Corps Birthday tradition. Miller is the daughter of Sgt. Major Hughs. Metzger is the sergeant major, Marine Corps Installations East, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
