The Honolulu District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers working together with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) downloaded about 30 generators at Saipan Airport Nov. 18, 2018, which will help restore power to the roughly 48,000 people still living without electricity. Typhoon Yutu’s 180 mph winds was one of the most powerful cyclones to hit any part of the U.S. since 1935 devastating the tiny islands of Saipan and Tinian that left thousands of people homeless or without electricity. Currently, USACE has deployed 24 personnel to the Pacific including a Team Leader, Assistant Team Leader, a debris removal subject matter expert, an electrical power SME, the 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power) Alpha Company and a Power Planning and Response Team. Under the Regional Activation Mission assignment, the personnel are providing Emergency Support Function 3 technical assistance in response to preparations and planning.
