EL PASO- A Soldier in 3rd Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery Regiment, deployed to the Texas-Mexico border as part of Joint Task Force Guardian Support says he’s not a hero, he's just doing “what is right." About five years ago Spc. Akeem Martin, Houston, TX, signed up to Be The Match, an international organization that matches recipients with donors of stem cells and bone marrow. He reads a letter, Nov.19, from the woman who received his stem cell donation just over a year ago. Martin has carried the thank you note from his recipient, LaShonda Goines, Houston, TX, for five months. His donated stem cells enabled LaShonda to go from a double cancer diagnosis to being cancer free in seven months. In early November, Spc. Martin and LaShonda Goines got to meet for the first time at the Be The Match annual council meeting in Minnesota and have solidified a special bond of family.
