A salmon leaps out of the water to overcome an underwater obstacle on its way up the North Santiam River near Big Cliff Dam, Ore., July 7, 2011. Salmon navigate up rivers and tributaries to native spawning grounds but sometimes U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ dams block their progress. The Corps remedied this for fish swimming upstream on the North Santiam River by constructing the Minto Adult Fish Facility in 2012. Now, the Corps can trap and haul these fish above Detroit Dam.
