Basically trained recruits must pass basic swim qualification in order to graduate boot camp. Marine Corps Instructors of Water Survival (MCIWS) train recruits to swim with combat gear and confidence. In order to become a MCIWS, Marines must pass a series of physically demanding tasks. Staff Sgt. Jonathan Miranda, the chief instructor for the MCIWS course, sat down with us to talk about the rewards of his job.

“When Marines see MCIWS, they see respect. It was something that was not given. It was something that was definitely earned, and hard earned at that.”

“There are moments where a recruit is extremely passionate about becoming a Marine. When they give 1,000 percent you get out of the drill instructor mindset and get into a “I am a father and brother” mindset and I want to help this person from human being to human being. When your instructions correct a recruits deficiencies, and they pass, you help someone’s wellbeing. That’s the most rewarding part about being a MCIWS.”
