Lt. Gen. Masato Taura, Northern Army commanding general, and Lt. Gen. Gary J. Volesky, the commander of I Corps, exit the closing ceremony of the annual bilateral exercise Yama Sakura 75 Dec. 16, 2018 at Camp Higashi-Chitose in Hokkaido, Japan. Yama Sakura is an annual bilateral command post exercise involving the U.S. Military and the Japan Self-Defense Force with the purpose of enhancing U.S. and Japanese combat readiness and interoperability, strengthening bilateral relationships, and demonstrating U.S. resolve to support the security interests of allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Both commanding generals delivered closing remarks to the exercise participants and reinforced the importance of the exercise in the scope of the U.S.-Japan Alliance.
