The ship’s wheel from the USS West Virginia (BB 48) is on display in the gallery of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. It is one of the larger artifacts that is scheduled to be returned to the curator branch of the Naval History and Heritage Command in January 2019 to make way for the opening of the museum’s new exhibit which chronicles the US Navy’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The West Virginia, a Colorado-Class battleship, was built at Newport News Shipbuilding, and commissioned in December 1923. She was heavily damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, resulting in the deaths of 106 of her crew members. She was eventually repaired, and participated in the remaining months of World War II in the Pacific. (US Navy Photo by Max Lonzanida/Released).
