Ermey was best known for his notable role as drill instructor Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in the 1987 film “Full Metal Jacket.” He served for 11 years in the Marines, including 14 months in Vietnam before being medically discharged in 1972 as a staff sergeant. He received an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant in 2002 from then-Commandant Gen. James Jones. Ermey died April 15, 2018 at the age of 74.
Ermey’s spouse, Marianila Ermey, received the U.S. flag from the service.
