In late July 1997, rain fell for three days straight on several northeastern Colorado counties. In Atwood and Sterling, Colo., approximately 13,700 acres of agricultural lands were swamped, and 1,600 homes and businesses were flooded. Then-Staff Sgt. Greg Clancy, a UH-1 Huey crew chief in the Colorado Army National Guard, was responsible for helping rescue a number of families off rooftops and deliver them to safety. Here he's recovering a small dog and returning it to its family, several hours after he plucked the family from a rooftop. (Photo by Master Sgt. Greg Clancy)
