Vice Adm. Brian Peterman, commander of the Coast Guard's Atlantic Area, addresses the crowd attending the commissioning ceremony of Marine Force Protection Unit (MFPU) Kings Bay, Ga., July 24. MFPU Kings Bay is the first unit of its type in the Coast Guard. MFPU Kings Bay will provide enhanced security for U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines within the unit's home port transit areas. MFPU Kings Bay is a single-mission unit that has specially trained and equipped Coast Guard personnel to man and operate escort vessels procured by the Navy specifically for that use. U.S. Coast Guard personnel have broad law enforcement authority, including the authority to establish, patrol, and enforce exclusionary zones, naval vessel protective zones, restricted navigation areas, and security zones supporting naval operations.
