U.S. Marines with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) prepare to drop an ammunition can containing personal notes for Cpl. Jonathan Currier into the Sulu Sea during a memorial service honoring Currier. The memorial was held as the Essex ARG and 13th MEU sailed through the Sulu Sea, Philippines; the same sea where Currier went missing six months earlier. “Cpl. Currier was a quiet professional who loved being part of our team and always accomplished the mission at hand,” said Lt. Col. Charles Bodwell, commanding officer, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 166 (Reinforced). “I challenged you to finish this deployment in his image, and you did.” The Essex ARG and 13th MEU is a capable and lethal Navy-Marine Corps team deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to support regional stability, reassure partners and allies and maintain a presence postured to respond to any crisis ranging from humanitarian assistance to contingency operations.
