Capt. Benjamin Pierce, an operations officer assigned to the 983rd Engineer Battalion, watches as Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Kevin Bigenho and Command Sgt. Major, Joseph Friler uncase the colors during an official welcome home ceremony, Feb. 7, 2019, in Swanton, Ohio. More than 150 soldiers assigned to the Monclova, Ohio based battalion served more than nine months in the Middle East, supporting engineering missions throughout the region. The mission of the 983rd Engineer Battalion is to increase the combat effectiveness of division, corps and theater forces by accomplishing general engineering tasks and limited mobility, counter-mobility and rear-area security operations when required. Uncasing of the battalion’s unique flags, referred to as the colors, is a traditional ceremony conducted by the U.S. Army upon returning home from an overseas deployment. The colors are also cased during official Call to Duty ceremonies prior to an overseas deployment. Air National Guard photo by Senior Master Sgt. Beth Holliker.
