Pat Mills, wife of Lt. Gen. Richard P. Mills, deputy commandant for Combat Development and Integration, welds her initials into a steel plate during a keel laying ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego Jan 19. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced Jan. 4 the approximately 765-foot long ship is to be named USNS Montford Point in honor of the 20,000 African-Americans who were trained at the North Carolina facility in the 1940s.
