    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit       

    1st Lt. Omer Rafiq, a platoon commander with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, fires during pistol marksmanship qualification aboard the dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48), underway in the South China Sea, Feb. 20, 2019. Rafiq, a native of Southbridge, Massachusetts, graduated from Worcester State University in June 2014 before commissioning in August 2016. Alpha Company Marines are the small boat raid specialists for BLT 1/4, the Ground Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU partnering with the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
