Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Liberia's first and seventh president, is a Petersburg, Va., native, and the first African American president. He migrated to Liberia in 1829 along with James Spriggs Payne, another future president. Petersburg is located adjacent to Fort Lee, Va. (Image by Augustus McCarty).
