Maj. Stoney Portis (left), former commander of Troop B, 3rd Sqdr., 61st Cav. Reg., hugs Andrew Bundermann the presentation ceremony of the Distinguished Service Cross to Bundermann on March 07, 2019 at Minneapolis Minnesota. Portis recounted the day of Oct. 3, 2009 and the events Bundermann faced that led to this momentous occasion. Bundermann was serving as the acting commander of troop B, 3rd Sqdr., 61st Cav. Reg. when Combat Outpost Keating, the post Bundermann had been left in charge of, was attacked by more than 400 enemy fighters. With only 53 Soldiers at COP Keating, Bundermann coordinated a defense for more than 12 hours, and endured another four days of fighting, that killed more than 100 Taliban fighters and injured another 80. The Distinguished Service Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor.
