Scenes from a Virginia State Historical Marker unveiling and dedication ceremony held in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. The historical marker, located on the roadside of Shore Drive, commemorates The Meeting of Three Commanders on September 5, 1781 during the Revolutionary War between General George Washington, Commander of the combined American and French Armies, Comte de Rochambeau, Commander of the French Expeditionary Army, and Admiral Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse, Commander of a large French fleet of warships. The meeting took place aboard De Grasse’s flagship off Lynnhaven Bay in what is now Virginia Beach. Present at the meeting was Virginia Beach Mayor, Robert M. Dyer, members of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, French officers assigned to NATO’s Allied Command Transformation, historical re-enactors in period specific uniform, and distinguished guests. The guest speaker for the event was General Andre Lanata, Supreme Allied Commander for NATO-ACT. (US Navy Photo by Max Lonzanida/Released).
